Mike McKie, a sophomore forward from Brooklyn, was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men's basketball after leading the Bulls to a 2-1 record in conference games last week.
He recorded 12 blocked shots in three games, including a career-high five in a win over Western Michigan. McKie had 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in a victory over Akron and scored the winning basket. In a loss to Ball State, he had seven defensive rebounds and three blocks, giving him 45 for the season. He leads the MAC with an average of 2.37 blocks per game.
On Monday, Mike Tyszka (West Seneca West) scored 20 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for Hilbert (7-9) in a 63-53 victory over visiting Fredonia (7-9).
In women's basketball, Fredonia State had little difficulty defeating Hilbert, 66-33, as Kim Guenther had 16 points and Renee Harpster (Holy Angels) netted 15.
In synchronized swimming, the host Golden Griffins swept all four events in the Canisius College Invitational. The Griffs had 90 points overall, to 73 for second-place Keuka College and 61 for Penn State.
Canisius winners were: Jill Wright in solo, 90.267 points; Caren Gellin and Jennifer Muzyk, duet, 88.333; Gellin, Muzyk and Wright, trio, 87.800 and the team of Heather Forester, Gellin, Kate Matusiak, Muzyk, Jennifer Rzepecki and Wright.
