Aida Lozada, a track and cross-country star at Lafayette High School, has been selected to participate in the Miss New York Teen All American pageant in Fishkill on Feb. 19 and 20. The state winner will go on to the national pageant in Miami in August. Aida, a senior, hopes for a career in mortuary science and is also involved in the New York National Guard 174th Regiment and West Side Ponytails softball. She is seeking sponsors for her pageant effort and can be reached at 881-3131.
Emmanuel Fried will teach a workshop for beginning and accomplished playwrights at Alleyway Theatre on Monday nights from 7 to 10 p.m. starting Monday. Selected one-act plays created by workshop participants may be produced in the theater's annual Buffalo Quickies. The workshop fee is $100, $85 if paid in advance. Call 852-2600.
The Gloria Parks Community Center, 3242 Main St., is offering a Learn to Swim program for beginner and intermediate swimmers starting Saturday and continuing through April 15. Cost is $30 for community center members. Call 832-1010.
The East Aurora High School AFS Club, Foreign Language Club and Helping Hands of International Students, along with other service clubs at the school, held a drive to collect medications, bandages, other supplies and money for relief efforts in Venezuela after the recent mudslides and flooding.
Elsewhere on the good deeds front, the Brownie Girl Scout Troop 787 of Holland donated $100 of their cookie sale funds to Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
