Sophie A. Szlachtun of the Town of Tonawanda died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 79.
Born Sophie Turner in Buffalo, she worked for Curtiss-Wright Corp. during World War II. She was active in the senior citizens group of St. Edmund's Catholic Church and was a member of Amended Hearts, a support group those with heart problems and their families. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 254, American Legion, City of Tonawanda.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, John W.; two daughters, Barbara Ciepila of Pendleton, and Shirley Michanion of Welland, Ont.; a son, John. W. Jr. of Williamsville; a brother, Walter Turner of Rochester; and 11 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Edmund's Church, 530 Ellicott Creek Road, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
