Mayor Irene J. Elia has submitted her nominees for the city's Urban Renewal Agency and Love Canal Area Revitalization Agency to the City Council for approval today.
For the Urban Renewal Agency, Elia has nominated Steven Brown, a certified public accountant and former Niagara County legislator; Deborah Mann, a banker; Marilyn Herowski, who owns a local printing company; and Doreen H. O'Connor, a former agency member and vice president of Sevenson Co., which owns the Comfort Inn-The Pointe, one of the Elia family's enterprises.
For the Love Canal agency, Elia has submitted the names of Nancy J. Joseph, her deputy director of economic development, and Donald LaVerdi, who works in the construction field and is a former Love Canal resident and activist.
The appearance of Elia's appointees on the agenda raised the question of whether the agency board still exists.
Elia said she is naming appointees so "we'll have somebody just in case business comes up, because it's not completely closed."
A spokesman at the agency office said technically the board does still exist but only for the purposes of having a chairman and treasurer to sign checks. The board is no longer meeting.
Also on today's agenda is the appointment of former acting Corporation Counsel Timothy G. Bax as a citizen appointee to the city Water Commission.
Council Chairman Anthony F. Quaranto and Councilman John G. Accardo, two of the sponsors, said Bax worked with the Water Commission during his time in the city's Law Department and is familiar with the issues and rate structure. Quaranto said the position is unpaid.
