M. MADALENE SMITH, RETIRED WILLIAMSVILLE TEACHER

M. Madalene "Marni" Smith, a retired elementary school teacher for the Williamsville School District, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. She was 78.

Born in Canada, Mrs. Smith received a bachelor's degree from Buffalo State College in 1943 and a master's degree in 1969. She served on the board of directors for the Buffalo State College Foundation and was a national chairwoman and past president of the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter.

Mrs. Smith taught at Eggert Road School from 1943 to 1946 and at Maple East Elementary School from 1965 to 1971.

She was membership secretary at Albright-Knox Art Gallery from 1961 to 1964. She also was a member of the Tuesday Music Group and the Thursday Book Club. Other memberships included Christ United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Benjamin; two sons, James M. Groh of Lafayette, Colo., and Steven J. Groh of Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Barbara J. Groh of Denver; a sister, Betty Ann Wehling of Florida; and a brother, John H. Marshall of Rochester.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Christ United Methodist Church, 350 Saratoga Road at Harlem Road, Snyder.
