Walter W. Caldwell, 86, who worked 53 years for the Medina Journal Register, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) in his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Millville and lived in Medina most of his life, attending Medina schools.

At the age of 16, he began working in an entry-level position at the Medina Journal Register, and retired in 1982 as a plant foreman.

In his spare time, Caldwell enjoyed gardening, playing cards and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the former Medina lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows, and was a past district deputy grand master of the Genesee-Orleans chapter of the Odd Fellows. He also served as chief patriarch and district deputy of the Odd Fellows' Orleans County Encampment.

Caldwell also was a 52-year member of the Medina Masonic Lodge, a 50-year member of the Medina Methodist Church, and a member of the Western Orleans Senior Citizens. He also was a charter member and past president of Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, the former Helen Loades; a daughter, Carol Green of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Whitney Jr. of Lockport; and two granddaughters.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Barnes-Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St. Burial will be in West Ridgeway Cemetery.
