TV DEAL ASSURES NO FOOTBALL PLAYOFF

ABC and the Bowl Championship Series agree: Four more years of matching the top two college football teams in a national title game is the way to go.

A playoff in Division I-A will have to wait at least six more years now that ABC and the BCS agreed on Thursday to a four-year contract extension worth about $400 million.

The new deal runs through the 2005 season and includes bowl games in January 2006. Taken as a whole, the entire eight-year package that began in 1998 is worth more than $930 million.
