TAR HEELS STOP BLEEDING, <br> KNOCK OFF MARYLAND

The reeling North Carolina Tar Heels avoided their first five-game losing streak since 1952 as Brendan Haywood matched his career high with 24 points in a 75-63 victory over No. 22 Maryland.

Maryland (13-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) made 10 of its first 17 three-pointers, but hit the offensive skids during a 14-0 North Carolina run midway through the second half that put the Tar Heels (12-8, 3-3) ahead, 59-50.

Elsewhere:

Albert Mouring scored eight of his 20 points in a 23-9 first-half run to lead No. 6 Connecticut (14-4, 3-3) to a 64-50 victory over Providence (8-11, 1-5) in the Big East.

Freshman DerMarr Johnson scored 21 points -- all in the first half -- to lead No. 1 Cincinnati (19-1, 7-0) to a 75-65 victory over Louisville (11-7, 3-4) in Conference USA.
