SURVIVOR OF FATAL CRASH DIES IN SECOND ACCIDENT

Two and a half weeks after surviving a car crash that killed her high school friend, a 17-year-old Jefferson County girl was killed in another car crash Wednesday morning.

The accident happened in the same spot as an accident that killed a third Thousand Islands High School student in 1998.

April Fitchette of LaFarge-ville, near Watertown, died at the scene when friend Elaine Dillon lost control on a slushy roadway of the car the two were in. Elaine was admitted to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown and was listed in stable condition Thursday.

An investigator said the accident was likely due to driver inexperience, and not speed.

The investigator said Elaine apparently "overreacted," causing the car to skid sideways into the opposite lane and the path of a car driven by 28-year-old Jessica E. Yerdon. Yerdon and her passenger were treated for cuts and bruises.

Two weeks ago, April survived an accident that killed her classmate, 17-year-old Jessie L. Walts of Depauville, 14 miles outside of Watertown.
