Drew Candle Co. is threatening to change the site of a proposed new 4,600-square-foot store in the Village of Alden because it does not want to install new sidewalks.
Company officials told the Alden Village Board on Thursday night that Drew cannot afford the $30,000 to $40,000 needed to install 5-foot-wide sidewalks on the front portion of a 2 1/2 -acre site on Broadway if a store is built.
"Because we are such a new company, we are unable to get a bond," said Jason Drew, co-owner.
The company currently operates a store from a modular structure at 13595 Broadway and rents space for candle manufacturing from Style Craft Homes in a plant at the same address.
"Everyone thinks it is stupid for the whole sidewalk to go in," said Glenn Drew, company co-owner.
Trustees gave conditional site plan approval for the proposed store in mid-January. Village requirements included new sidewalk construction, along with water and sewer line construction at the site.
Village officials said final approval will not be given unless the sidewalks are installed or money is set aside for the improvements in an escrow account.
Glenn Drew said the site for the new store may be moved, but candle-manufacturing operations will remain in Alden at the Style Craft building. Drew produces 40,000 candles a week at the Alden site, company officials said.
