UNION SEEKS TO REPRESENT TWO HIGHWAY EMPLOYEES

The Wales Town Board on Tuesday discussed how it would handle a request for union representation for two Highway Department employees.

Supervisor Mary Weinman said four days ago the town received a registered letter from Local 17, International Union of Operating Engineers asking to the represent the two.

The board has 30 days to respond or the request goes to the state Public Employee Relations Board.

The board will discuss the matter again at its regular board meeting.

The old highway barn became a matter of "should we or shouldn't we" when a previous decision to tear it down and use the space for parking was in danger of being overturned. Several board members decided they had grown attached to the barn and wanted it saved for some other purpose.

Councilman Ray Poliseno recommended "some money be put into it" to turn it into a historical museum or use it to store smaller equipment such as tractors.

A surprised Weinman pointed out that the parking problem still needed to be addressed. She said the barn would need to be boarded up to secure it from trespassers if it were to be left standing. The board was urged to keep an open mind on the matter.
