MAN CHARGED WITH STEALING LIQUOR, MIXERS FROM CLUB

A Cheektowaga man was charged with stealing bottles of liquor and mixers from an East Side nightclub that was damaged by fire hours earlier, Northeast District police reported Tuesday.

Officers said Harold Goldsmith, 31, of Preston Road was seen walking from Player's Club late Monday night, carrying several bottles. When officers tried to talk to him, he fled through several yards and was taken into custody at Rawlins and Genesee streets.

The club was among three businesses and apartments housed at 1841 Genesee St., which sustained an estimated $100,000 damage in a two-alarm blaze earlier Monday night.

An investigation by Walter Clark and Edwin Ortiz of the Fire Investigation Unit determined the cause of the blaze was electrical.

After the burglary at the site, police reported the recovery of a hammer and several bottles each of mixers and liquor. Officers reported another man was seen running north on Bailey Avenue, carrying a plastic garbage bag that presumably contained more bottles of liquor.

Goldsmith was charged with burglary, criminal possession of stolen property and burglar's tools, petit larceny, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.
