Betty Moreau, who participated in elephant research and helped set up the Marbet Ray Circus, died Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after becoming ill in her home. She was 83.

The highlight of her 83rd birthday was riding an elephant at the Erie County Fair last summer.

She helped her late husband, Raymond G. "Sabu" Moreau, a well-known elephant handler and elephant historian, build and promote the circus throughout the area and assisted in his research. Moreau died in 1994.

Born Betty McDonough in Auburn, she came to the Falls in 1943. She was a member of the Rainbow Shelter of Niagara County and the Circus Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Joy.

Services will be private.
