The Allegany County Legislature will meet in a special session today to consider if it will endorse the idea of a new state prison in Friendship.
State Sen. Patricia McGee, R-Franklinville, has asked the Legislature to decide if it will back the Town of Friendship in its request that the state site a new medium-security prison there.
On Monday, the Legislature fell one vote short of allowing discussion of the resolution endorsing a prison in Friendship.
The sponsor of the resolution, Legislature Chairman Edgar Sherman, R-Little Genesee, subsequently called the special meeting for 3:30 p.m. today, at which time two-thirds of the legislators will have to vote "yes" before the resolution can be considered.
The state plans a new medium-security prison this year, and Friendship is at or near the top of the list of prospective sites.
