Michael E. White of Lockport, a former sales representative for two local energy companies, was sworn in Monday as deputy Niagara County treasurer.
White, 44, took the oath from his boss, Treasurer David S. Broderick, behind White's new desk.
White's annual salary will be $40,276. He replaces Lawrence E. O'Lay of North Tonawanda, who retired at the end of 1999 after 28 years in the position.
White, a Lockport native, was sales manager of R.L. Gaude Co. of Lockport, an oil company, for 10 years and followed that with three years as energy sales representative for NOCO Energy Corp. of the Town of Tonawanda.
For the past year, White was an insurance broker for Axxcess Insurance of Amherst.
Broderick said the appointment was his alone and did not require County Legislature approval. However, the Legislature's Human Resources Committee did give him an exemption from the normal 120-day waiting period before filling a vacant job.
Broderick didn't advertise the job opening.
"I never really had to," he said.
After O'Lay's retirement plans became known, "I got eight applications in two or three weeks," Broderick said.
