The Summer Opportunities Fair, an annual event showcasing summer programs and volunteer opportunities for middle- and high school-age students, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Hall at Nichols School, 1250 Amherst St. Exhibitors, who attend by invitation only, include camps, travel opportunities, academic enrichment and community service organizations. The fair is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by Elmwood Franklin, Park School, Buffalo Seminary and Nichols.

Daniel P. Barrett of North Tonawanda, a senior at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, has received an Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English. He was one of 700 recipients nationwide from a pool of more than 3,000 candidates nominated by their high schools. Nominees had to submit a portfolio of written work and complete a writing sample under supervision. Daniel, a National Merit semi-finalist, is student director of the school's annual food drive, a saxophonist selected for the New York Conference All-State band, president of the school's concert band and yearbook editor. He has been accepted for admission to Yale University in the fall.

Six Flags Darien Lake is accepting applications for various seasonal positions for the 2000 season, from May to October. Positions include ride attendants, lifeguards, food service staff, public relations/sales and marketing staff, maintenance and more. Interested applicants can apply in person at the Six Flags Darien Lake Human Resources Office, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or can apply online at www.sixflags.com. Those interested can also call 599-5108 with any questions. Applicants must be at least 15 years old.
