IT'S NOT FAIR TO KEEP MCCAIN OFF THE BALLOT

I finally agreed with one of The News' editorials. I say amen to "Party bosses, New York style" in the Jan. 20 edition. As a registered Republican who is a supporter of John McCain, I am feeling a great deal of frustration over the archaic Republican state primary system. For months, I have followed McCain and worked to get him on the ballot in my district.

Much to my disappointment, mine is one of the districts where he will not be on the ballot. I feel as though the party that I have supported for 14 years does not trust my intelligence. The Republican leadership of New York is choosing our candidate for us.

The last time I checked, or taught it to my U.S. history and government students, we lived in a democracy. The power rests with the people. Is the Republican Party telling us that they don't work that way? Are they insulting the intelligence of the people who support their own party? Because if that's the case, it's time for a change. It's time to change the leadership. It's time to change the rules. And if none of that works, it's time to change parties.
