A driver fled the scene in a taxi Sunday morning after striking a utility pole on Whirlpool Street and shearing off the front end of his car, police said.
According to Niagara Falls Police Officer James Tedesco, the vehicle was southbound on Whirlpool Street at 3:30 a.m. when it crossed over the center line, struck the pole and split in two, part of the vehicle spinning back around and blocking the driving lane.
Tedesco said that several witnesses saw the driver, whom they described as "highly intoxicated," get into a cab and leave the scene.
The damaged vehicle was registered to a North Avenue woman, police said. An investigation is continuing.
