Charlotte F. Deweese, 79, a secretary at the White House during World War II, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) in her home after a brief illness.
The former Charlotte Gelz lived all her life in Niagara Falls, except for her wartime stint in Washington.
She graduated from Kelly Business School and worked as a secretary at Bell Aircraft Co. during World War II before moving to the White House.
Before the war, she had been secretary to the Niagara Frontier Boy Scout Council, where she met her husband, J. Howard. He died June 24, 1999, after 59 years of marriage.
Mrs. Deweese was a volunteer "gray lady" at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for the past 35 years.
She was a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Moriarty of Horseheads; a son, Charlie of San Diego; a sister, Corrine Peploe of Morehouse, N.C.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Riverside Presbyterian Church, 84th Street and Lindbergh Avenue.
