Sugar Shane Mosley made his Las Vegas debut a spectacular one. In doing so, he might have moved a date with Oscar De La Hoya even closer.
Showing the punching power of a welterweight with the speed of a lightweight, Mosley (34-0, 32 knockouts) knocked Willy Wise down twice Saturday night, finally stopping him in the third round of their scheduled 10-round fight at the Hard Rock hotel-casino.
The display of power in only his second welterweight fight after making eight defenses of his lightweight title immediately moved Mosley up in the crowded ranks of the top 147-pound fighters.
Mosley's performance might move up a fight with De La Hoya to June 17 in Los Angeles.
"If they want it then, we'll do it," Mosley said. "This fight showed me I have the punch to beat any welterweight."
