MAN INDICTED IN SHOOTING OF SCHENECTADY OFFICER

A 19-year-old man accused of shooting a police officer and missing another officer was indicted Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder.

The grand jury charged that Kami Hodge, also known as James Smith, shot at Officer Edward Ritz, who was struck but saved by his bulletproof vest, and at Officer Matthew Haskin, Ritz's partner.

Police said Hodge pedaled a bike past two other officers Dec. 6 and taunted them. Police chased Hodge, who abandoned his bike and ran into a convenience store parking lot where Haskin and Ritz attempted to intercept him. But the suspect allegedly pulled out a pistol and opened fire, hitting Ritz.
