All those cookies thrown on Temple basketball coach John Chaney last week from the stands in St. Bonaventure's Reilly Center came as no surprise to Tony Masiello.
The mayor, a former Canisius College basketball star, remembers how hard it was to play the Bonnies in Olean. He lists Reilly among "the toughest places I've ever played."
And it prepared him for politics. Last week's incident rekindled memories of the 1976 brouhaha at City Hall over an occupancy tax proposal, which came up when Masiello was a Council member.
Irate citizens stormed the Council chambers, Masiello recalled, and his Council colleague -- the late Bill Price -- remarked on Masiello's calmness.
"This is nothing," Masiello replied, "after you've faced those fans in the Reilly Center."
