DOC CAN'T CURE TASTE FOR FANCY DRESSING

During 25 years on "The Tonight Show," Doc Severinsen was known as much for his colorful, clashing outfits as for his musical talent.

But for his current tour with his big band, he purchased a few traditional suits. He quickly found out he wasn't suited for the conventional duds.

"They were too conservative," he said. "When a salesman picks out a matching coat and pants, I ask him for pants and coats that don't match."

Severinsen, who has played with such musical greats as Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Charlie Barnet, was musical director on the late-night show starring Johnny Carson from 1967 to 1992.
