SUSPECTED ILLEGAL ALIENS ARRESTED IN ST. CROIX

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) -- Police arrested 31 suspected illegal Chinese immigrants Thursday on the island of St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Independent reported Friday.

A police officer saw a truck "with seven suspicious individuals" on the east side of the island, the newspaper quoted deputy police chief Novelle Francis Jr. as saying. Police began a search of the area and arrested 24 other Chinese nationals, it said.

More than 370 Chinese nationals have been smuggled into the U.S. Caribbean territory since March. They generally seek political asylum from their communist government.
