CUBA OBSERVES 41ST YEAR OF CASTRO'S RISE TO POWER

While much of the rest of the world was celebrating the end of the century and the millennium, Cuban communists were honoring the 41st anniversary of the revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power.

"Cuba: 2000 Victories" was the political slogan for this year's annual festivities, marking the arrival of Castro's bearded revolutionaries in Havana on Jan. 1, 1959. Castro descended from the mountains to the eastern city of Santiago on that day and arrived in Havana a week later.

President Fulgencio Batista, whose government the revolutionaries had battled to topple, fled Cuba that New Year's Eve.
