A lump removed earlier this week from the thyroid of Tipper Gore, wife of Vice President Gore, was not cancerous, her doctor said Thursday.
Dr. Robert Udelsman of Johns Hopkins Hospital issued a statement saying that results show the lump, removed from the right lobe of Gore's thyroid on Tuesday, was benign and it was unlikely she would require treatment with thyroid hormones.
Udelsman's statement said results of the lump show a follicular adenoma of the thyroid gland.
Follicular adenoma is a benign tumor, and the thyroid is a hormone-producing gland at the base of the neck.
Mrs. Gore, 51, who was released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, was resting comfortably at home, and Udelsman said doctors would continue to monitor her thyroid hormone levels.
