ERIE COUNTY TO GET TOBACCO MONEY

An early payment of more than $6 million from the tobacco settlement is expected today, Erie County Comptroller Nancy Naples said Thursday.

The payment had not been anticipated until Jan. 10 and is a welcome surprise, she said, but due to a 13 percent decrease in cigarette consumption, the amount is somewhat less than originally anticipated.

The county's projected $17.95 million share of the settlement, including the $6,021,769 expected today, has been accounted for in the 2000 budget.
