The glaring bright lights, the confident voice of the doctor, the comforting reassurance of the nurses, the loving support of my husband. These are the moments of the 20th century I hold most memorable, the births of my five children. Moments of agony and anxiety, awe and anticipation, hope and inspiration -- Feb. 15, 1983, Aug. 14, 1986, June 18, 1990, Sept. 17, 1995, and Nov. 23, 1997. These are not famous dates in time as yet, but through a mother's eyes, heart and hope, perhaps dates that will yet be remembered in time.
A cure for cancer, an honest politician, a walk on Mars, a leader of generations, the first woman president, a healer of hurt, a peacemaker. Children represent the best gift of the 20th century, and the brightest hope for the century to come. It is with a full heart that I say: Welcome 2000. May we find health, happiness and hope.
