Cornelius C. Dowd of Williamsville, 77, a retired marine engineer, died Monday (Dec. 27, 1999) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a lengthy illness.
A native of Buffalo and a lifelong resident of the area, Dowd attended Lafayette High School and General Electric Diesel School. He served as an officer in the Coast Guard during World War II.
Dowd worked at Boland & Cornelius Steamship Co. in Buffalo, which later became American Steamship, for 47 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a life member of Buffalo Lodge 23 and Lodge 860, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and was a past exalted ruler of Lodge 23. He also was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Western New York Merchant Marine Post 1947, the American Legion, the Holy Name Society of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Amherst and the Order of Alhambra.
Surviving are his wife, Norma Jeanne Donohue Dowd; a daughter, Catherine E. Cassatt of Buffalo; four sons, Daniel N. of Lighthouse Point, Fla., Timothy V. of Homosassa Springs, Fla., Michael C. of Gilroy, Calif., and Charles; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Gregory the Great Church, Amherst. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
