TWO HURT IN NEWFANE AS CAR HITS UTILITY POLE

Two people were injured Tuesday when their car slid out of control on icy Lake Road and struck a utility pole, Niagara County sheriff's Deputy Paul J. Moran said.

The driver, Donald J. Smith, 77, of South Main Street, was admitted to Newfane Inter-Community Memorial Hospital with head injuries. He was listed in fair condition late Tuesday, a hospital official said.

His passenger, Josephine Smith, 75, of South Main Street, was discharged after treatment for leg injuries, a hospital official said.

The crash occurred at 2:22 p.m. as Smith's westbound car slid across the roadway, through a ditch and into the pole about a mile east of Transit Road, Moran said. The car was destroyed.
