Richard H. Skellen, 65, who retired from the former Marine Midland Bank in Wilson after 35 years of service, died Monday (Dec. 27, 1999) at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after suffering a heart attack.
He was born in Niagara Falls and was a graduate of the former DeVeaux School.
Skellen and his wife, the former Herberta Lederhouse, made their home in Ransomville, where they raised their four sons.
He enjoyed spending summers with family and friends at his cottage near Lake Ontario. In addition, he enjoyed gardening and investing.
Skellen was a member of the Fillmore Chapel Church, the Ransomville Fire Company and the Ransomville Exempts for 45 years.
He was treasurer of the Ransomville Fire District for 28 years and treasurer of the Wilson Businessmen's Association.
Skellen started out as a janitor at Marine Midland Bank in 1962, working his way up to manager of the Ransomville Branch in 1974. He moved to the Wilson Branch in 1985 to serve as manager, retiring in June 1998.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Jeff of Lewiston, Terry of Niagara Falls, and Harold and Randy; a sister, June Weber of Florida; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fillmore Chapel Church, Ransomville and Youngstown-Wilson roads. Burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria.
