An unidentified man was killed early today when an Amtrak train in downtown Buffalo ran him over on railroad tracks near the Exchange Street rail passenger station, authorities said.
Homicide investigators were called to the scene at about 7:40 a.m. to determine if foul play was involved in the death. The man, described as in his 30s, was decapitated, according to officials.
"He had extensive mortal wounds," said Gregory M. Gill, a spokesman for Rural/Metro Ambulance, which initially responded to the scene after a call for first aid was received.
The last train to pass along the tracks, prior to the discovery of the man's remains, was at 4:40 a.m.
Officials at the scene said a sleeping bag was found near the man's body and may have belonged to him.
