CEO, WIFE ACCUSED OF ABANDONING SICK SON

It seemed to speak of total desperation: A husband and wife allegedly abandon their disabled 10-year-old son in his wheelchair at a hospital, with a note saying they couldn't care for him anymore.

But prosecutors say the father is the head of a $500 million-a-year chemical company, PQ Corp. of Berwyn, Pa., and the mother is a member of a Pennsylvania state advisory council on disabilities.

Richard Kelso, 62, and his wife, Dawn, 45, of Exton, Pa., offered no explanation as they were arraigned Tuesday on one count each of child abandonment and conspiracy.

Police said the Kelsos left their only son, Steven, in his wheelchair Sunday at the Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children, which has been treating him for many years.

Steven suffers from cerebral palsy and has required a respirator for most of his life, a relative said. He added that the couple had been left without nursing help over Christmas, sleeping in shifts to handle their son's round-the-clock needs.
