Stella G. Smith, 82, of Buffalo died Saturday (Dec. 25, 1999) in her Buffalo home after an illness of several months.
A native of Bradford, Pa., the former Stella Johnson was one of 10 children. When she was 7, her family moved to Hornell, where she went to school. She graduated from St. James Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell.
In 1952, she moved to Buffalo and began working at Buffalo General Hospital, where she did private-duty nursing with terminally ill patients. Family members recalled that she was much in demand because she instilled the drive to survive in her patients.
She retired from Buffalo General in 1985 but continued doing private-duty nursing until 1989.
Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church and was a volunteer in the church's distribution of food and clothing to those in need. She also was a member of the church's Ladies Sodality.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Leonard H.; a daughter, Mary Susan Wayne of North Tonawanda; a son, Frederick of Wantagh, L.I.; a sister, Florence Egger of Boulder, Colo.; a brother, William Johnson of Hornell; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Trinity Church, 317 Leroy Ave.
