NEWS CARRIER STRUCK <br> BY CAR, BADLY INJURED

A Buffalo News carrier was seriously injured Monday when he was struck by a car as he crossed Genesee Street near Colden Court in Cheektowaga.

Michael Suriani, 16, of Colden Court suffered severe head trauma in the accident. His condition was upgraded to serious today after he was listed in critical condition in Erie County Medical Center late Monday.

The accident occurred at about 5:40 p.m., according to Cheektowaga police Capt. Thomas Rowan.

"A preliminary investigation suggests he was completing his route when he saw he was one paper short. He was crossing Genesee Street to go to a Vix store to purchase an additional paper when he was struck," Rowan said.

The driver, Margaret Schwartz, 44, of Zent Court, Cheektowaga, told police she never saw the youth, and police said he was crossing in the middle of the block. No charges have been filed against the driver, although the case remained under investigation late Monday by the Cheektowaga Accident Investigation Unit.

Rowan said first aid was immediately called to the scene, after which the youth was transported to ECMC.
