A Cuba resident died after a head-on collision Sunday afternoon in the Town of Sardinia that also injured her daughter and granddaughters, Erie County sheriff's deputies said.
Karen Verdick, 56, was pronounced dead late Sunday in Erie County Medical Center. She had suffered internal injuries, according to deputies.
An autopsy will be performed today by the Erie County medical examiner's office.
Wind and snow appear to have contributed to the accident, which occurred at about 4:45 p.m. on Route 16, north of Route 39, deputies said.
A northbound car driven by Dawn Bauer, 28, of Niagara Falls went out of control and slammed head-on into a southbound car driven by Gina Haynes, 31, of Cuba, deputies said.
Bauer, who suffered internal injuries, was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, where she was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said today. A passenger, David Hoffman, 21, also of Niagara Falls, was treated for minor cuts and released.
Haynes, who is Verdick's daughter, suffered cuts and bruises to the face, and chest and leg injuries, deputies said. She was treated in Mercy Hospital, deputies said, but it was not clear today whether she was admitted.
Haynes' two daughters, Chelse, 7, and Ann, 15, suffered minor injuries and were expected to be released after receiving treatment at an unidentified hospital. Another passenger, Erin Sullivan, 16, of Orchard Park, a niece of Haynes, also was treated for minor injuries at an unidentified hospital.
