SEPHRONIA SPELLS SIMS, ACTIVE IN CHURCH

A funeral for Sephronia Spells Sims will be held at 6 p.m. today in Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 572 Clinton St., where she was a longtime member and elder. Burial will be Tuesday in Forest Lawn.

She died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 95.

Born in Bolton, Miss., Mrs. Sims was the youngest of 10 children.

After her father died when she was 9, she quit school in the third grade to care for her ailing mother.

She also worked in the cotton fields of Mississippi and worked in private homes as a housekeeper.

She and her late husband, John, were married in June 1919 and raised eight children.

The family moved to Buffalo from Memphis, Tenn., in 1936 and joined Holy Temple Church of God in Christ.

Mrs. Sims was active in the church, where she was a member of the choir, and held positions that included president of the junior and senior usher boards, pastor's aide and president of the Mothers Board.

"She was the kind of person that I would introduce to the president of the United States and not be ashamed. She had five children who survived into adulthood, and all of them graduated from college," said her youngest daughter, Barbara Reed.

Survivors also include two sons, William and Lonie L.; another daughter, Doris M. Benton; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
