EAST AMHERST'S ORPIK HELPS U.S. TEAM ACHIEVE TIE

Boston College defenseman Brooks Orpik of East Amherst scored an unassisted goal to give his team the lead, but the Czech Republic rallied for a 2-2 tie with the United States in an opening-round game of the 2000 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Barrett Heisten, Buffalo's No. 1 pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft from the University of Maine, gave the U.S. team a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the first. The United States (0-0-1) continues round-robin play against Slovakia (0-1-1) Tuesday morning.

In other hockey news: Mike Minard made 27 saves and Peter Sarno and Daniel Cleary scored goals as the Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Rochester Americans, 2-1, in an American Hockey League game. Darren Van Oene spoiled Minard's shutout with 51 seconds left to play.
