An expanded fireworks display and wide variety of indoor and outdoor family-oriented activities are planned for the annual New Year's Eve celebration in the Village of Akron.
Events, including special children and teen activities, entertainment, refreshments in Russell Park and hayrides will be held throughout the evening, according to program organizers.
The Akron Soccer League will provide free raffle tickets from 8 to 9 p.m., which will result in four winners of soccer packs.
Also featured is the alternative pop metal band Bullyrag, starting at 8 p.m. in a heated tent on Clinton Street. Early Late Boys will spin a variety of favorite tunes beginning at 10:30 p.m.
A millennium movie matinee for children ages 6 to 10 will begin at 9 p.m. in Newstead Town Hall on Church and John streets.
L.L. Tillman Post, American Legion, is host to an adult venue featuring the sounds of Spank.
Portions of Main Street will be closed from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday for a spectacular fireworks display and the ball drop at midnight. A "Community Time Capsule" will be filled at 11:30.
The alcohol-free event, which runs from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., is sponsored by the Akron Celebration Committee and several local businesses.
