Much has been written in the local sports pages about the UB Bulls' 0-11 football season. I had the opportunity to travel with UB President William Greiner to watch the Bulls play the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks. While we were all disappointed with the outcome of the game, I came away thoroughly impressed by the entire organization.
These young men and their coaching staff exhibited true professionalism form start to finish. Despite trailing the entire game, they never gave up even in the final seconds. Despite being taunted by the opponent's unruly fans, they never responded negatively. Despite completing a winless season, they always held their heads high. After the game, there were no signs of poor sportsmanship. In fact, many players mingled with fans and spoke with young children who were waiting to meet them.
At a time when there seems to be so much negative publicity about the behavior of professional athletes, and how they act in public, I can say with confidence that this football team represented their school and the community with dignity, with pride, and with great professionalism. So, despite the losing season, in my eyes the UB Bulls football team is a group of winners.
