Police detonated two suspicious packages delivered to the house where the Cuban boy at the center of an international custody battle is staying -- but they were believed to have been Christmas gifts, local media said Saturday.
Six-year-old Elian Gonzalez was rescued at sea last month after a boat carrying illegal immigrants capsized. His mother was one of 11 people who drowned.
The boy is staying with relatives in Miami who want him to remain in the United States, but his father has appealed for him to be sent home to Cuba. President Fidel Castro has accused the United States of kidnapping Elian and mobilized thousands of people to stage the biggest anti-U.S. protests on the island in years.
The packages were delivered Friday for the boy who has been showered with presents since arriving in the U.S., but his relatives were worried by this delivery after a video crew was spotted "acting suspiciously" outside around the same time.
