A 22-year-old Houghton man who lost control of his snowmobile Thursday night died from massive injuries, authorities said Friday.

James A. Sears was operating the vehicle at a high rate of speed when the machine became airborne while crossing a ditch on the 8400 block of Mount Monroe Road in Rushford at about 7:50 p.m., according to State Police Investigator Michael Jackson and Trooper Charles Sackett.

The snowmobile flipped end over end twice, fatally injuring Sears, who was not wearing a helmet, the officers said.

Sears was pronounced dead in Olean General Hospital.
