A car belonging to world champion figure skater Maria Butyrskaya blew up on a Moscow street minutes before she planned to head to the Russian national championships, the newspaper Sport Ekspress reported Friday.
The newspaper said the explosion took place early Thursday evening on a Moscow avenue. It cited witnesses as saying they had seen two young people running away from the car shortly before it blew up.
The newspaper said the explosion took place just minutes before Butyrskaya intended to travel to the Sokoloniki Arena for the Russian Figure Skating Championships.
Butyrskaya defeated U.S. champion and Olympic silver medalist Michelle Kwan at the 1999 World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
