Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has a Christmas message for first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton: "Bah humbug!" And oh, yeah, "Go back to Arkansas."
The Republican Giuliani and Clinton, a Democrat, are likely to run against each other for the U.S. Senate next year in a race in which the subtexts are likely to be Giuliani's temper and Clinton's lack of political experience in New York.
Friday -- Christmas Eve -- Giuliani tried to focus on the latter but unwittingly exposed the former when a reporter asked him to respond to a criticism made by Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson. Wolfson said the city's Board of Education had voted not to extend the contract of School Chancellor Rudy Crew because Crew had publicly criticized Giuliani.
The mayor's response: "Go back to Arkansas. We're going to celebrate Christmas here in New York. So I say 'Merry Christmas' to everyone, including some press flak who can't figure out how to celebrate Christmas."
"This is not the time for press spinning and politics and Arkansas politics and all that other stuff," the mayor added.
