IGNORING CHORUS DEADLINES WOULD RESULT IN CHAOS

This letter is in response to the woman whose child will not be participating in the All-County Chorus in March. As an Erie County music educator, I, too, have faced the organization's deadlines. The writer points out that the rules are inflexible. Isn't that what rules and deadlines should be? The words "flexible" and "rules" are not synonymous.

If the organization makes exceptions for one district, teacher or student, it must make exceptions for every late applicant. As one who has chaired a county group in the past, I know that this would result in utter chaos. In addition, what would we be teaching our children? That rules and deadlines can be disregarded? A final point: I'm willing to bet that the deadline will be missed by that teacher only once.
