It is taking entirely too long for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to do the morally right thing and return 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba. This should be a no-brainer. Elian is a minor whose closest relative is his father. The boy belongs with him, regardless of where the father lives. Geography should not be a consideration.
Now I read in The News that New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani may exploit the situation by bringing Elian to New York City to take part in the New Year's Eve Times Square celebration. This is pure politics. For shame!
For once, Fidel Castro is right. Time does matter here. The boy should be returned before he becomes brainwashed by well-meaning relatives and exploited by both countries for political purposes.
