A new Wyoming County sheriff's deputy received the top honor as 12 officers graduated from the 780-hour Basic Police Course at the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy this week.

At ceremonies conducted at Niagara County Community College, Deputy David R. Suttell was given the Joseph E. Steblein Award for excellence in all areas of police training.

Named after the academy's first training director, the award is given to the officer from each graduating class whose conduct and exemplary performance fixes him as a role model for future officer trainees, Academy Co-Director Thomas C. Beatty said.

Three other trainees also received awards.
