JAMES HEIGL, RETIRED BUFFALO FIREFIGHTER

James Heigl, 85, a retired Buffalo firefighter, died Dec. 9, 1999, in his home in Valrico, Fla., after a brief illness.

A Buffalo native and city resident most of his life, Heigl retired as a lieutenant in the Buffalo Fire Department in 1976 after 27 years on the job. Most of his service was with Engine 11 and Engine 26.

Heigl was a member of the Valrico Elks Club in Florida and a former member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Buffalo. He also was an avid golfer, bowler and card player.

Prior to moving to Florida 12 years ago, he resided in Hamburg for a few years.

Heigl's first wife, the former Helene Kaczmarek, died in 1975.

He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy Heigl; three daughters, Evelyn Bata of Silver Spring, Md., Jacqueline Green of Ocean Pines, Md., and Helene Burgio of Columbia, Md.; two sons, James Heigl Jr. of Middleburg, Va., and Daniel Heigl of Columbia, Md.; a sister, Winona Smith of the Town of Tonawanda; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 9 in St. John's Catholic Church, Columbia, Md.
