Masten Council Member Byron Brown has provided $1,500 in city block grant funds to help sponsor Buffalo's 1999 Kwanzaa celebration.
The weeklong celebration begins Sunday and will conclude Jan. 1.
Kwanzaa, a seven-day observance of African-American cultural and spiritual principles, was developed and initiated by Mulana Karenga, a professor at California State University at Long Beach, 33 years ago.
Locally, the celebration will open at 7 p.m. Sunday in the McCoy Convention Center, 533 Clinton St., and will be sponsored by the Langston Hughes Institute, 25 High St. Sharon Holley will be the guest speaker for Sunday's program celebrating "umoja," or unity. The City Honors African Dance Troupe will perform.
