Tennis great Don Budge, hospitalized in critical condition following a car accident, is on a ventilator but making progress.
"He is becoming increasingly aware of his surroundings and he is becoming more alert and we are encouraged," hospital spokesman Jon Wojciechowski said in Poughkeepsie.
But Budge was put on a ventilator Friday after he began experiencing respiratory distress.
Budge, 84, was injured when the car he was driving near Milford, Pa., went off the road on Dec. 14. Budge was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
